Frozen prawn and other whole frozen feed are excellent for channa, but the thawing process matters as much as the food itself.
Thaw frozen feed in a small cup of tank water, never directly in the tank and never in hot water — hot water breaks down proteins and leaches nutrients into the thaw water, which you should discard, not pour into the tank.
Feed only what your channa finishes within a couple of minutes. Uneaten frozen feed fouls water fast because it’s already partially broken down from freezing, unlike pellets which hold together longer.
Rotate frozen feed with a quality pellet a few times a week rather than feeding frozen exclusively — it keeps nutrition balanced and gives you an easy way to gauge appetite, since a channa that suddenly ignores pellets it normally eats is often your earliest sign something’s off.
